Energy per unit electric charge that is imparted by an energy source, such as an electric generator or a battery (A.K.A. Electromotive Force (EMF), electrical potential). In the metreÐkilogramÐsecond (MKS) system of units, electric potential is expressed in units of joules per coulomb of electric charge (i.e., volts).
