Channel

The region separating the source and drain of a field-effect transistor. The channel is designed to be normally "on" (conducting) for depletion-mode FETs, or normally "off" (insulating) for enhancement-mode FETs. With the application of a voltage to the gate electrode, the conducting properties of the channel are altered, thereby controlling the current across the channel. The length of the channel is an important parameter in determining the current of the FET, as well as its switching speed.
